Margaret Sinclair (nee Beaton)
Margaret (Meg) was born on 1st October,1871 at Copmanhurst N.S.W. and was only 8 years old when the family moved to South Australia and 21 when she travelled on to Perth with her mother and two younger brothers in 1892 on the S.S Polynesian.
From there they went by coastal shipping to Geraldton and road to ‘Beatonsfield ‘ at Yandanooka.
In Ken’s letter to his mother in Adelaide dated 1891, Ken congratulates Meg on her engagement to James Robert Sinclair. When and where they met we do not know.
THE SINCLAIR’S
This Clan is of Norman origin. Its founder was William de Saint Clair, a relation of William the Conqueror, who settled in Scotland at Roslin, near Edinburgh soon after 1066. Their stronghold continued to be at Roslin Castle even after they became Earls of Orkney.
The Sinclair’s have a direct descent from William Sinclair of Roslin in Midlothian in 1280. They have a long distinguished involvement in Scottish history back to Sir William Sinclair sitting in the Scottish Parliament in 1283-4.

Jim passed away in 1926 in Fremantle.

John (Jack) Alexander Sinclair was born on 26th January, 1896, and part of his schooling was as a boarder at Guildford Grammar School.

Jack was 20 years old when he enlisted in World War 1.
Rose Limbourn
Rosena (Rose ) Frances Limbourn was born in England on 13th January, 1894.
Rose’s two elder brothers emigrated to Western Australia. Rose waited with her sister-in-law until after the birth of her baby and then accompanied mother and baby to join her brothers in Western Australia. They left England aboard the S.S.Armadale on 20th November, 1912 and arrived in Australia on the 7th January, 1913.
One of Rose’s first occupations in Western Australia was at Boan’s Store in the lampshade section, where she was joined by her sister Florence.
Her next post was as home help and companion to the wife of Dr. Sutton, and their six children.
Dr. Sutton was the Director of Agriculture in W.A. The family lived at Ellesmere St, Mt.Lawley.
Rose’s next position was to travel to Melbourne as companion to a lady and there she rejoined her parents and younger brother who were then at Burnley, Victoria.
In 1920 her parents and younger brother arrived in Perth.
On returning to W.A Rose became Head of the Women’s Wear section of the Co-Operative Store at Moora.
While there she met Jack Sinclair, a bank clerk, working in the town.

Jack and Rose were married on 1st Sept, 1923 at Mt Lawley.
Jack suffered ill health from the gassing he received in the French fields but continued working for the bank. The family spent some time in Kalgoorlie, during which time one of Jack’s duties was accompanying gold transportation by rail to Perth. In 1928 he was appointed to the position of Bank Manager in Narrogin when he became ill and was unable to fill the position. He had to resign from the bank and tried outdoor work as a woolclasser in the hopes the country air would help his lungs. Jack spent considerable time in and out of hospital and contracted tuberculosis. This with the damage already sustained to his lungs proved fatal and he passed away at the Edward Millen Home in Victoria Park on the 16th October, 1934 at only 38 years of age. He is buried at Karrakatta.
Rose was left with a family of four aged between 10 and 4 years.
Jack and Rose had a War Service home at 106 Coode St, South Perth and from an insurance policy,( taken out before Jack became incapacitated) Rose was able to pay for the house £1000 ($2000) and managed with the War Widows Pension. Jack’s brother Clarrie also gave assistance over the years, particularly with Ken’s education expenses in attending Wesley College..
Many years later Rose suffered a bad fall and seriously injured a leg, in later life this necessitated amputation.
Rose died at 93 years of age, on 25th February, 1987, fifty-three years after her husband, Jack and is buried with him at Karrakatta.

Clarence (Clarrie) McIntosh Ringwood Sinclair was born on the 11th of July, 1897 in Esperance.
Clarrie attended Guildford Grammar School from 1910 to 1915 as a boarder.

On his return from War Service Clarrie went on to work as a Commercial Traveller.
Clarrie married Evelyn Mildred Good on the 17th of December 1924, and they had a family of four, two daughters and two sons. One son, Alexander died during infancy.
Clarrie began his own tyre business in 1932 in the premises at 806 Hay St, eventually
establishing Sinclair’s Tyre Company in the island building at the junction of Wellington and Milligan Streets in Perth.
Clarrie had a house built at 48 Clotilde Street, Mt Lawley in 1925 and resided there until 1952. His mother Meg lived with the family for thirty years until moving to full time care.
A close family, Clarrie was very concerned for both his brothers and their respective health problems, and after Jack’s passing, for Jack’s widow and young family. Donald was helped through employment and accommodation and of course always with regard and encouragement. Jack’s son, Ken received financial assistance to enable him to attend Wesley College, South Perth. All acts show a great compassion and commitment to his own and the extended family.
In 1952, after being retired for some time, he bought an agency business in Queen St, Perth. Evelyn encouraged him in this, and a couple of years later Barbara and Bernie joined him in this venture. They stayed on, although the goods they warehoused in the agency changed over the years, until 1992 when they closed the doors and retired themselves.
Clarrie died on 29th June, 1963 at the age of 65. At this time he lived in Nedlands.
Evelyn died on 23rd January, 1984.

John Alexander Beaton
John Alexander (Jack) was born in Copmanhurst NSW on 5th September, 1873.
The sixth child and third son of Sandy and Euphemia Beaton he was always known as Jack by family and friends.
He would have been 6 years old when they left Copmanhurst for Adelaide, South Aust.
Jack travelled with his younger brother Kenneth on the ‘S.S.South Australian’ in September 1889 when he was sixteen to join his father and two older brothers on the Nullagine Goldfields.
From the proceeds of their hard work, the family bought land at Yandanooka and the Thundelarra Station at Yalgoo.
Jack is recorded as being a Road Board Member of the Upper Irwin Road Board from 1901- 3.
In 1919 Charles left Thundelarra with his young family and later sold his share of Thundelarra to Jack and Don.
Jack married Isobel Jeffreys Stubbs on 20th February, 1919.
Isobel’s father was Sidney Stubbs , a member of Parliament who served for 45 years as MLA and was for a period, Leader for the Legislative Council and was awarded a Knighthood KCMC -CMG for his services.
Jack spent some years residing mainly in Perth, employing workers and sharing management duties of the property with Donald.
In 1928 the property carried 28,000 sheep and 34 windmills but then the stock market crash, fall in prices and drought seasons affected them, the same as others on the land, and all their circumstances changed.
Don Jnr. and Duncan managed the property at different times during the 30’s , Duncan was still managing the property when he enlisted in the R.A.A.F.
Jack asked Stan Lines to return to the station and undertake the management of the property.
During this time of stringencies, Jack and Belle moved back to spending most of their time on the station, although they retained accommodation in the city.
The property remained in joint names until after the war, when after negotiations between all parties, Jack became the sole owner of Thundelarra .
Copies of some of these papers relating to the sale are included among the pages relating to Donald Beaton and his sons. The original documents are held by Donald’s grandson, Bruce.
Jack was a founding member of the Karrinyup Golf Club and like all the Beatons a member of the Weld.Club.
Isabel was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery on 22nd June, 1955 .
Jack died on 7th July, 1960 at 87 years of age and is buried at Karrakatta Cemetery.

Ian Jeffrey Beaton
Ian Jeffrey Beaton , the son of Jack and Belle, was born on the 4th January 1920, at Claremont.
Ian attended Hale School and was an under 16 Champion Runner and also a School Prefect.
The Hale School Records show that in 1936 Ian held the :

Passed his Leaving : Distinction in Maths A
Champion athlete : Running, Cricket and Football.
Ian’s sister Laurie, and his wife Margaret, both donated photographs and items of sporting memorabilia relating to Ian’s sporting prowess to Hale School museum.
Ian enlisted in the Airforce during the War and after training as a pilot, spent quite a time at Point Cook, Victoria training others to fly, eventually seeing service in the Borneo area.
Ian married Margaret Frances Wheatley on the 19th October 1943 in Melbourne, Vic.
Ian joined the Bank of New South Wales from school and after discharge from the services rejoined the bank in Melbourne, returning to Perth for 16 years, Sydney for 6 years, Hobart for 7 years as Chief Manager of Tasmania then to Sydney as the Manager of the King and Castlereagh Sts Branch.
Ian retired from this position in June 1984.
Ian rose in the Bank to become Personnel Manager in Sydney and then General Manager of Tasmania and retired from the position of Manager of the King and Castlereagh Sts Branch in Sydney.
Ian died on the 3rd of April, 1991 at 71 years of age and is buried in St Johns, Church of England Gordon, Sydney, N.S.W.
