Foreword
The Other Side of the Street is not a story I ever imagined I would write.
There are parts of my life in these pages that I once wished I could erase. Addiction, homelessness, loss, fear, mistakes and moments when I genuinely did not know if I would make it through another day. But there are also parts I would never want erased, because somewhere amongst all of that darkness I discovered love, compassion, purpose and just how powerful people can be when they refuse to give up on one another.
I have not written this book because I have all the answers. I have written it because I have lived on different sides of life. I have been the person struggling, the person who needed help, the person who pushed people away, and eventually the person fortunate enough to be in a position to help others.
Some of these pages were difficult to write. Some brought back memories I had buried for years. Others reminded me just how far life can change when someone is given another chance.
If there is one thing I hope you carry from this book, it is that we should never judge somebody's entire life by the chapter we happen to meet them in.
Sometimes all it takes is one person to believe there might still be another chapter.
DEDICATION
This book is dedicated first and foremost to my partner, Jenny.
You have seen me at my worst and watched me fight my way towards something better. You have sacrificed more than most people will ever know, and so much of the life I have today would not exist without you.
To my sons, Kane, Zion and Isaac. You are three of the greatest reasons I kept fighting. I hope that when you read these pages, you understand that your dad was far from perfect, but he never stopped trying to become a better man.i love you boys so much.
To every person who is struggling with life right now, whether through addiction, homelessness, grief, loneliness, mental health challenges or circumstances that feel impossible to escape. Your story is not finished.
To every person sleeping in a tent, a car, a park, a doorway or somewhere they never imagined they would call home, you deserve to be seen as a human being before you are seen as a circumstance.
To the incredible volunteers, supporters, businesses, organisations and everyday people who have helped build Nourish Street, thank you. You have restored and strengthened my faith in humanity. You have shown me what can happen when a community stops asking whose problem something is and starts asking how it can help.
To the people who gave me another chance when I needed one, and to those who trusted me enough to allow me into their lives when they needed one, thank you.
And finally, this book is dedicated to anyone who has ever believed their past has already decided their future.
It hasn't.
